Prelecture Videos Video Transcript

This is a transcript of the video on the Educator Features page and Student Features page.

Hi. I’m here to talk to you about an exciting feature you’ll find in Mastering Physics. Created specifically for Physics students and instructors, Mastering Physics is designed to support students’ mastery and application of the Physics skills they’ll need for a successful future career. The interactive nature of the videos engages today’s students outside of the classroom, better preparing them to actively participate in lecture and discussion.

In this video, I’ll show you how pre-lecture videos and their accompanying assessment questions expose students to concepts before class, creating active class participants and allowing instructors to spend more time focusing on problem areas during class time.

In Mastering Physics, the Prelecture video series provides students with brief, conceptual explanations of key concepts that act as building blocks for problem-solving skills.

First, we click “play” to watch the Pre-lecture video. In this video, we see a whiteboard style explanation of Vectors.

Each Pre-lecture video includes “pause and predict” points along the way that encourage students to think about the concept they just learned and check their understanding while making predictions about the physics they are watching.

This activity exposes students to their misconceptions and corrects them before they take root. Students can watch the video as many times as necessary to get the correct answer and even at a later date for self-study.

Once students finish the video, they’re prompted to complete an assessment associated with the video topic.

Let’s input an incorrect answer so we can see the power of Mastering’s hallmark wrong-answer specific feedback. This feedback is designed to help students understand their mistakes without giving them the correct answer right away. They will continue to get feedback until they get the question right.

This scaffolded approach mimics in-person office hours even when a student is at home! When a student inputs the correct answer, Mastering Physics further reinforces the concept by explaining why the answer is correct.

The questions force students to demonstrate what they’ve learned and give the instructor the opportunity to use the gradebook to recognize the most common misconceptions and address them during lecture or discussion. Student grades go directly to the Mastering Gradebook for easy instructor access.
