In Winter 2021, Pearson surveyed 749 learners and 72 instructors in STEM and business/economics courses in an effort to understand their perceptions and expectations when using a digital learning platform in quantitative courses. These learners and instructors were general users of digital learning platforms including Pearson products such as MyLab and Mastering.

In addition to restructuring their Intermediate Algebra course objectives and utilizing MyLab Math, math faculty decided to incorporate the text "The New Science of Learning" directly into the course. Their goal was to improve learning and student outcomes in the course by teaching students to recognize how their brains learn and, in particular, the value of doing homework.

This study was conducted by Pearson's Impact Evaluation Team as part of their efficacy reporting. In Fall 2015, Pearson conducted research across five US higher ed institutions and found that higher homework, quiz, and test scores in MyLab Math were related to a higher probability of passing the course, and the more a student engaged with MyLab homework (regardless of right or wrong answers), the more likely a student was to pass the course.

James Lee wanted to create a flipped classroom setting that would benefit students, offering the opportunity for independent learning via MyLab Math and an interactive textbook, combined with in-class discussion and active assignments. The MyLab Interactive Assignments and exercise feedback allow students to master objectives prior to attending class, where Lee then solidifies that understanding with active in-class assignments. Data show that students who perform better on the Interactive Assignments perform better on other class assessments.

Graduation rates have increased eight percentage points and retention rates have increased ten percentage points after the implementation of Pearson Inclusive Access. Student success rates in gateway mathematics courses have increased 17 percentage points with Inclusive Access in place. A comparative analysis of traditional textbook package prices and Inclusive Access costs indicate that students save an average of 68% off traditional prices when using Inclusive Access course materials.

After Pearson Inclusive Access was implemented, the percentage of students enrolled in MyLab Math across four courses who began to submit homework assignments by the second week of the semester increased twelve percentage points, from 75% to 87%.

While the pass rate for the Fall 2017 cohort of College Algebra II was 79%, the pass rate for students earning 85% or higher on MyLab homework was 52 percentage points higher than for those students who earned less than 85% on MyLab homework.

Faculty redesigned the Elementary Algebra course from an emporium model to a hybrid model that incorporated some of the newer features available in MyLab Math, such as customizable assignments and diagnostics. With their new implementation, they hoped to keep students on track with due dates, increase instructor and student engagement, and ultimately increase pass rates on assessments within the course.

Students who earned a D/F on Test 1 and participated in the school’s Test Retake Program, which requires several steps of remediation, saw an average course success (ABC) rate of 72 percent, compared to a course success rate of 41 percent for students who also earned a D/F on Test 1 but did not participate in the program.

Students who earned higher MyLab homework scores showed greater improvement between module PreTests and PostTests. Students who scored higher on MyLab homework earned higher final course scores.

After completing required personalized MyLab Math remediation, students increased their practice test scores an average of 9 percentage points and chapter exam scores an average of 21 percentage points from first to final attempt. Students who scored above the average on their video notebook earned an average of 43 percentage points higher on other assessments in the course.
