MasteringGeography Tour Video Transcript
This is a transcript of the video on the Educator Features page and Student Features page.
Hi, I'm here to talk to you about some of the exciting features you'll find in MasteringGeography.
With today's students, text and media go hand in hand. They look for interactive ways to see geography concepts come to life. MasteringGeography gives instructors the foundation to teach the major concepts of geography in the most dynamic way!
First, instructors want their students to see relationships across data points, especially when it comes to maps and geographic data. Often, these students MAY NOT see how geographic data can relate to the economics of certain regions. With MapMaster Layered Thematic Maps...
Students can stack and compare different map data. Through the GIS technology, they are able to see the patterns and spatial relationships in data. This ultimately helps them to understand the geography of a location more clearly.
Next, every geography instructor wants to bring the location to life. It's hard to show concepts in the real world without traveling to actual sites. But with Encounter Earth Exercises...
Students receive a virtual field trip to locations they most likely will never visit in their lifetime. They get to see concepts come to life through the dynamic features of Google Earth. Mastering also provides assessments for these Google Earth locations.
What if instructors want to provide their students with more opportunities to see distant places, people and their geographies? Well, with BBC and Financial Times Videos...
Instructors can provide their students with a sense of distant places and people. Those students get a better idea of what's going on in the world.
From there, many instructors are looking for ways to foster a more engaging classroom experience. Some want to flip their classroom while many others are just looking for ways to increase student participation.
Learning Catalytics is an interactive, student response tool that uses students' smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage them in more sophisticated tasks and thinking. You can pose a variety of open-ended questions that help your students develop critical thinking skills, while monitoring responses to find out where they're struggling, allowing you to adjust your instructional strategy in real-time. You can also use Learning Catalytics to automatically group students for peer-to-peer learning. Plus their work in Learning Catalytics feeds into the Mastering gradebook.
Not every student learns the same way and at the same rate. And now, thanks to advances in adaptive learning technology, you no longer have to teach as if they do. Mastering uses real time data and analytics, to reinforce concepts that target each student's strengths and weaknesses.
Dynamic Study Modules help students study effectively on their own, using adaptive algorithms that adjust the content based on each student's understanding of the concepts.
Students complete an initial set of questions with a unique answer format that asks them to indicate their confidence level. Once completed, Dynamic Study Modules provide students with explanations of the answer, using materials from the text. The questions repeat until the student can answer them all correctly and confidently. These modules can be accessed on smartphones, tablets, and computers, so students can study virtually anywhere, anytime.
Finally, some students think geography is going to be relatively easy, but they are then overwhelmed by the amount of information they need to know. This results in them coming to class unprepared. But with GeoTutorsÉ
Students are provided annotated illustrations and narrated videos. The videos expand on some of the more difficult-to-understand concepts, and give students a voice to hear outside of their instructor's. The animations guide the eye through complex processes, breaking them down to easily understandable pieces.
