Mastering Microbiology Tour Video Transcript

This is a transcript of the video on the Educator Features page and Student Features page.

Hi, I'm here to talk to you about some of the exciting features you'll find in Mastering Microbiology.

This is an online homework, tutorial and assessment program that improves results by helping students quickly master microbiology concepts. Students benefit from self-paced tutorials, immediate wrong-answer feedback and hints that emulate the office-hour experience.

To start off, many students struggle to learn key concepts and processes in microbiology. They'd benefit from interacting with the material in addition to studying it in a textbook or listening intently in their professor's lecture. Some students also want to know how the microbiology concepts relate to allied health, clinical problem solving and other applications. With new Interactive Microbiology Tutorials and Animations...

Instructors can can use these interactive microbiology modules as an alternative presentation of concepts during lectures, and assign them as homework to reinforce students' in-class learning. Students are engaged through clinical case scenarios that place challenging topics in a real-world context. They also learn from manipulating variables, predicting outcomes and answering formative and summative assessment questions.

Let's discuss the challenge of teaching students who have varying levels of preparation for the work required to succeed in the Allied Health microbiology course. Most instructors don't have the time to review foundational material that students should know from previous coursework, which in turn makes it difficult for those students to learn important new concepts in microbiology. But, with new Microbooster Tutorials...

Students quickly get up to speed in foundational concepts that are important to their success. Instructors save valuable time by assigning them and holding students accountable for learning. Best of all, students can access the tutorials using any online-enabled device including a smartphone, tablet or computer.

From there, many instructors are looking for ways to foster a more engaging classroom experience. Some want to flip their classroom while many others are just looking for ways to increase student participation.

Learning Catalytics is an interactive, student response tool that uses students' smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage them in more sophisticated tasks and thinking. You can pose a variety of open-ended questions that help your students develop critical thinking skills, while monitoring responses to find out where they're struggling, allowing you to adjust your instructional strategy in real-time. You can also use Learning Catalytics to automatically group students for peer-to-peer learning. Plus their work in Learning Catalytics feeds into the Mastering gradebook.

Next, we look at how students are required to learn microbiology terminology and other factual material. Some students have difficulty managing their study time. But, with Dynamic Study Modules...

Instructors can save valuable class time by assigning the modules and holding students accountable for learning basic concepts outside of class. Through this effective method of self-study, students receive a manageable number of questions while indicating their confidence in the answers. They cycle through a dynamic process of test-learn-retest until they master the material.

Finally, instructors have limited time in lab to teach techniques that connect with the concepts students learn during lectures. Some students struggle to visualize processes that happen at a cellular level. Yet, with MicroLab Tutors...

Students and instructors get the most out of lab time and help connect microbiology concepts with real-world applications. Assessment questions hold students accountable for learning information before class. Hints and feedback in the tutorials help students prepare for the actual lab. The answer-specific feedback and coaching enhances the way they interpret and analyze different lab results.
