Faculty redesigned the Elementary Algebra course from an emporium model to a hybrid model that incorporated some of the newer features available in MyLab Math, such as customizable assignments and diagnostics. With their new implementation, they hoped to keep students on track with due dates, increase instructor and student engagement, and ultimately increase pass rates on assessments within the course.

Instructor Coffman implemented Revel in her course with the goal of assigning quizzes to increase student reading, engagement, and overall performance in the course. She reports students are arriving to class having read the material and are more engaged with the course content. Average exam scores and final grades were significantly higher when Revel was required for 13% of the overall course grade than when Revel was not required.

Students who scored higher on Learning Catalytics in-class assignments, on average, earned higher exam grades and higher final course grades. Ninety percent of student survey respondents agreed that the in-class Learning Catalytics questions helped their understanding of the lecture content or helped them identify misconceptions they had about the lecture material.

In Business Law I, midterm exam scores were 9 percentage points higher than midterm scores when MyLab was optional. In Business Law I, midterm exam scores were five percentage points higher than midterm scores when MyLab was optional. On an end-of-semester student survey, 97% of respondents agreed that their understanding of the course material increased as a result of using MyLab.

To save time and money for the department, the course was redesigned from a face-to-face course to a hybrid, emporium-style course run by one lead instructor, keeping MyLab IT as the foundation of the course. Students who completed all Excel Grader Projects in MyLab IT had average Excel Capstone Project scores seven percentage points higher than students who skipped one or more Excel Grader Projects and the difference is statistically significant. At the end of the course, 89 percent of students reported feeling extremely or very confident in their ability to successfully use Microsoft Office.

Students who earned a D/F on Test 1 and participated in the school’s Test Retake Program, which requires several steps of remediation, saw an average course success (ABC) rate of 72 percent, compared to a course success rate of 41 percent for students who also earned a D/F on Test 1 but did not participate in the program.

She reports that following the implementation of Revel in the course, students are arriving to class having read the text and are prepared for discussion. Results show that students who earned a Revel grade of A, B, or C in the course were also more likely to pass the course.

On an end-of-semester survey, 92 percent of student survey respondents strongly agreed that completing Revel reading and quizzes increased their understanding of the course material, and 79 percent agreed that experiencing the text through Revel helped them feel more engaged with the course content than a traditional textbook.
