Mastering Engineering Graphical Answer Type Video Transcript

Hi. I'm here to talk to you about an exciting feature you'll find in Mastering Engineering. Created specifically for Engineering students and instructors, this online homework and assessment tool is designed to support students' mastery and application of the skills they'll need for a successful career in Engineering.
In Mastering Engineering, tutorial problems provide the next-level support for student learning. Tutorials also give students the opportunity to practice in an interactive environment, using graphical answer types.
In this video, I'll show you how engineering-specific graphical tutorials work for your students. The questions allow students to visualize answers the way they would when working a problem on paper. While Mastering doesn't replace critical pencil-and paper work, it does enhance how students solve problems and assess their knowledge during homework.
Now, let's take a look at the Shear and Bending Moment and the Mohr's circle tutorial homework problems.
In this tutorial, students will practice their problem solving skills by drawing shear and bending moment diagrams from the free-body diagram of a beam.
Let me show you how students add answers to this type of question and how the system responds with feedback.
Place vertical lines at 0, 4, 16, and 20 meters.
Place a segment of type linear decreasing slope between the first two lines from 52 to 40.
Place another linear decreasing slope between the second and third vertical lines from 20 to negative 16.
Place the last segment between the third and fourth vertical lines at negative 46 and 0.
Mastering Engineering identifies the mistake and coaches students to explore their process.
In addition to feedback specific to each error, Mastering Engineering provides two types of hints, both designed to help students work through, and ultimately solve, problems.
Declarative hints provide advice on how to approach the problem while Socratic hints break a problem down into smaller sub-problems.

In this next tutorial, students will draw Mohr's Circle.
Mohr's Circle tutorials teach students to do stress analysis using the Mohr's Circle method. You can see how students work through this type of question and how the system responds with feedback.
Pick sigma for the positive x axis and tau positive y axis.Enter the center of the circle.

This helps students make connections without giving them the correct answer so they can become better problem solvers.
