Mastering Engineering Tour Video Transcript

This is a transcript of the video on the Educator Features page and Student Features page.

Hi, I'm here to talk to you about some of the exciting features you'll find in Mastering Engineering.

Mastering Engineering is an online homework, tutorial and assessment tool designed to improve student results through personalized learning. Created to emulate the instructor's office-hour environment, it provides students with wrong-answer specific feedback and hints as they work on tutorial homework problems.

Leading things off, instructors find it time consuming to explain basic errors to students during office hours. For students, it's hard to understand what you're doing wrong by only getting an error message without feedback. That's why Tutorial Homework Problems with wrong-answer specific feedback...

Helps students to be better prepared and more engaged. The wrong-answer feedback provides an explanation as to why a question is wrong. For instructors, the decrease in student visits saves time and allows those that do seek guidance to do so at a higher level.

Next, students want to know what they will need to study to be successful. At the same time, Instructors want to make sure they are properly evaluating their students' comprehension of the material while meeting their department requirements. With Learning Outcomes...

Instructors can better evaluate student understanding because all problems are tagged to specific learning outcomes. Mastering Engineering content has been tagged to ABET Learning Outcomes A, E & K. Instructors are also able to add their own learning outcomes. Using Learning Outcomes as a guide, students can easily identify what they need to know and do as they progress through the program.

From there, many instructors are looking for ways to foster a more engaging classroom experience. Some want to flip their classroom while many others are just looking for ways to increase student participation.

Learning Catalytics is an interactive, student response tool that uses students' smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage them in more sophisticated tasks and thinking. You can pose a variety of open-ended questions that help your students develop critical thinking skills, while monitoring responses to find out where they're struggling, allowing you to adjust your instructional strategy in real-time. You can also use Learning Catalytics to automatically group students for peer-to-peer learning. Plus their work in Learning Catalytics feeds into the Mastering gradebook.

Not every student learns the same way and at the same rate. And now, thanks to advances in adaptive learning technology, you no longer have to teach as if they do. Mastering uses real time data and analytics, to reinforce concepts that target each student's strengths and weaknesses.

Dynamic Study Modules help students study effectively on their own, using adaptive algorithms that adjust the content based on each student's understanding of the concepts.

Students complete an initial set of questions with a unique answer format that asks them to indicate their confidence level. Once completed, Dynamic Study Modules provide students with explanations of the answer, using materials from the text. The questions repeat until the student can answer them all correctly and confidently. These modules can be accessed on smartphones, tablets, and computers, so students can study virtually anywhere, anytime.

Instructors often don't have the time to explain advanced topics in class. Students fail to arrive prepared for class, which leads to their instructor wasting class time covering basic topics. So with the Coaching Activities feature...

Students get step by step visual help. The assessment questions let students test their understanding. They come prepared for class, which improves their chances of success and allows the instructor to teach more effectively.

Finally, instructors find it difficult keeping track of individual students and overall class performance. That's why with Gradebook Diagnostic Charts...

Instructors have a highly visual, one-click overview of class and student performance. The charts don't just list grades, but summarize other key performance measures such as: item difficulty, time on task and grade distribution.
