Hatheway-Dial saw the need to include Excel proficiency in her course for two main reasons: employers were asking for graduates with Excel skills, and a working knowledge of Excel would help students in their subsequent business courses. Hatheway-Dial used MyLab IT for Excel practice and assessment and offered an incentive for students to sit for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel certification exam. Data show that 63% of students who completed all MyLab IT assignments passed the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel certification exam, while just 25% of students who skipped one or more assignments passed.

Students who completed all MyLab IT Simulation Trainings earned average Grader Project scores 11 percentage points higher than students who skipped one or more Simulation Trainings. Students who scored above average on MyLab IT Grader Projects earned average exam scores 12 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on Grader Projects. On an end-of-semester survey, 96% of respondents agreed that their understanding of the course material increased as a result of using MyLab IT.

Students who scored above average on MyLab IT lab assignments had an average Capstone Grader Project score 16 percentage points higher and average exam score 14 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on MyLab IT lab assignments. Students are encouraged to achieve a score of 90% or higher on Capstone Grader Projects in order to earn a MyLab IT badge. On an end-of-semester survey, 76% of respondents agreed that, “MyLab IT badges give me an advantage when applying to jobs.”

​To allow students to take the industry-standard Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams on campus, Ciomek initiated the process to become a Certiport Authorized Test Center. Since Between May and December 2018, 196 students sat for an Excel or Access MOS exam​; 81 students (41%) passed and received certifications. On an end-of-semester student survey, 89% of respondents agreed that, “Having a Microsoft Office Specialist certification brings an advantage when applying to jobs.”

Despite a flexible schedule in which all course assignments were due at the end of the semester, the majority of students (79%) stayed on track with the instructor’s recommended pacing guide and completed 91% of course assignments on average. Students who scored above average on homework earned Grader Project scores an average of 15 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on homework.

Students who scored 90% or greater on MyLab IT homework had lab test scores 12–17 percentage points higher than students who scored less than 90% on MyLab IT homework. 100% of respondents agreed that they were able to easily access MyLab IT through Canvas and appreciated not having a separate, second login and password for MyLab IT.

95% of student survey respondents agreed that they prefer to have required course materials included in the course fee (through Pearson Inclusive Access) rather than having to purchase them on their own. 90% of student survey respondents indicated an appreciation for LMS integration that simplified the experience of accessing MyLab IT via Blackboard without needing a separate login and password. As the completion rate of homework assignments increased, the unit exam average also increased.

Students missing three or fewer assignments had an average final course score of 95% — 19 percentage points higher than students who missed four or more assignments and had an average final course score of 76%. Assignment completion is critical to course success, as students must achieve at least 82.5% to pass the course. Since implementing MyLab IT, course evaluation ratings have increased and remained steady, a testament to the course’s new redesigned structure, assignments, and the instructor’s teaching methods.

Across four CIT courses in Spring 2018, 63% of students achieved introductory MyLab IT Microsoft Office badges. 93% of the students who reported receiving a badge on an end-of-semester survey also reported claiming the badge with Acclaim. 88% of student survey respondents agreed that MyLab IT badges add value, and 85% agreed that MyLab IT badges give an advantage when applying to jobs.

To save time and money for the department, the course was redesigned from a face-to-face course to a hybrid, emporium-style course run by one lead instructor, keeping MyLab IT as the foundation of the course. Students who completed all Excel Grader Projects in MyLab IT had average Excel Capstone Project scores seven percentage points higher than students who skipped one or more Excel Grader Projects and the difference is statistically significant. At the end of the course, 89 percent of students reported feeling extremely or very confident in their ability to successfully use Microsoft Office.
